CHARACTER
Name: Wilson P. Higgsbury
True Name: Wilson Percival Higgsbury
Canon: Don't Starve (Turn of Tides cinematic)
Age: 31
History: https://dontstarve.fandom.com/wiki/Wilson#Origin

The last thing he remembers is a chunk falling out of the Constant's moon into the ocean, causing a tidal wave that swept him away. Waking up on a boat kind of fits with that, but this specific boat really doesn't.

Powers/Abilities:
  • Unusually warm and fast-growing beard. It keeps him warm in the winter. The hair is also useful for resurrection magic in his world but that's unhelpful here, though possibly of academic interest. As minor of a power as this is, it's the only unique game-mechanical ability he has in canon.
  • Most of his inventory is stored in hammerspace, but that doesn't prevent stuff he's carrying from being detected or slapped out of his pockets, it just allows him to carry more things and larger things than he should be able to fit on his person. This is normal for his world, so he doesn't think it's magical or remarkable. This can include entire structures if he 'pre-builds' them and then decides not to put them down, though only one of each type of structure at a time can be pre-built. In the event of his death his inventory ruptures and drops all of its contents on the floor around his corpse except for the prebuilt structures, then reforms empty when he respawns. (What happens to the prebuilt structures depends on the server settings; usually they reappear in his inventory when he revives, but on Wilderness Mode servers where death kicks you back to the character selection screen they vanish permanently.)
  • "Forbidden knowledge"; had a lot of miscellaneous information crammed into his head by Maxwell and Them as a boon in exchange for building the portal. Some of that knowledge is anachronistic but mundane, some of it concerns the magic from his world (much of which is shadow-related) and the history or nature of the Constant, some of it is perfectly ordinary scientific facts that were available in his time but not something he personally knew beforehand, a lot of it he doesn't know that he knows until something reminds him of it.
  • Highly... streamlined... crafting abilities; given the right materials or reasonable substitutes, he can make various improbable items that would normally require much more equipment and/or time, such as turning a big wad of raw spider silk into a top hat, or making glass from a pile of sand, without any tools or intermediate steps for either. He can turn some sticks and bits of flint into basic tools like a shovel or grass and a stick into a woven wicker trap in the space of a minute or two. And that's without getting into the explicitly magical items that this also applies to, at least the ones that can be built while away from a crafting station. Very few of 'the right materials' will be freely available on the ship, though he could tear up the fixtures for mundane components like Boards, Cloth, Rope, maybe the occasional Electrical Doodad from something with enough internal parts. However, anything requiring Living Logs or live animals is probably beyond his reach; likewise, resurrection items exist in his canon, but either the recipe won't be available or the result will be nonfunctional even if he gathers the components. Inventory:
  • Clothes, shoes, crab-shaped novelty backpack
  • Log Suit
  • Football Helmet
  • Ice Staff, 90% durability (18 shots) remaining
  • Tentacle Spike
  • Full stack (~40 units) each of twigs, cut grass, flint pieces, and small rocks. Useful for making basic tools like torches, axes, and hammers.
  • 17 lumps of "gold" (Maxwell's inaccurate recreation from the Constant that for some reason makes more durable tools than flint)
  • 6 hunks of nitre
  • 4 pieces of Pig Skin
  • Pre-built campfire and Endothermic Fire
  • Pre-built wooden sign and wooden directional sign
  • Tam O'Shanter
  • Flint-and-twig pickaxe
  • Flint-and-twig chopping axe
  • Lantern that runs on bioluminescent "lightbulb" fruits and Slurtle Slime
  • 2 Desert Stones - single-use teleportation beacons, nonfunctional without a Lazy Deserter to broadcast to them
  • Pan Flute, 80% durability (8 shots) remaining - playing any tune on it makes everyone and everything capable of sleeping within 15m, except the user, fall asleep for approximately 20 minutes
  • Morning Star electrified goat-horn mace, 92% durability remaining (durability drains continuously while in use)
  • Walking Cane - he's able-bodied and not using it to conceal a smaller weapon; the cane makes the user walk/run faster by magic. It's also at least mostly indestructible to mundane forces; it can be lost or stolen, it can be destroyed by targeted magic such as the protective wards of the Nightmare Throne, and given enough time to digest it a lureplant can eat it (this may be magic or it may just be acid and persistence), but it doesn't decay and it can't be snapped in two or worn down by use, even if it's used as a blunt instrument rather than a walking aid.
  • Ashes of Eye Bone

Job History:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, 1912
  • Some knowledge of other STEM subjects as well, primarily self-educated or through university electives, the most useful of which are medicine and engineering; geology not included, because he thinks it's boring, and modern technology not included because he's from 1921. Very much the 'jack of all trades, master of none' when it comes to scientific disciplines.
  • Got into graduate school, but did not complete his doctorate program on account of exploding the chemistry lab and leaving the university in disgrace; pursued an independent research career as a 'Gentleman Scientist' afterwards
  • Built an interdimensional portal from blueprints provided by shadowy forces (thereby demonstrating basic proficiency in carpentry, welding, and animal sacrifice), then survived for months - well, on many occasions didn't survive, but was able to resurrect himself every time - in a selection of desolate monster-filled wildernesses constructed by Maxwell
  • Demonstrated tenacity, resourcefulness, resilience in the face of workplace intimidation, and independent problem-solving skills by successfully navigating to the end of Maxwell's specially constructed challenge worlds and seizing the Nightmare Throne
  • As the holder of the Nightmare Throne, occupied a managerial position over the Constant for an indeterminate timespan that was probably between a few hours and around a week; for much of that he was attempting unsuccessfully to resign from the position and then Charlie initiated a hostile takeover and fired him, but he was theoretically responsible for events, R&D, and operations management

Suppressions:
  • Hates admitting that magic or ghosts are real, even though he has personal hands-on experience with both
  • Generally despises admitting that he doesn't already know something when he feels like he should and buries it under a heap of denial
  • Worried that he might not actually be that good of a scientist, represses that feeling HELLA hard and in fact overcompensates for it (see previous point)
  • Wants other scientists to respect him as a peer; they generally haven't in the past
  • Complicated feelings about Maxwell, the former shadow-king of the Constant whom he replaced. Resentment and anger because of what Maxwell did as king of the Constant and how much of a smug asshole he was about it; pity and sympathy because of the state he found Maxwell in; annoyance and frustration because Maxwell has an aggravating personality and the two of them find it satisfying to rile each other up; a certain fondness because getting taunted by Maxwell was his only human(ish) contact for a while and later after they were both dethroned they agreed to form a truce and work together on yet another portal and it went fairly well; homoerotic rivalry and a certain amount of very irritable attraction. Wilson will admit to perhaps half of this, maybe two thirds if pressed particularly hard, and won't even admit the rest to himself.
  • Worried that "They" (the mysterious, shadow-associated eldritch power behind the Nightmare Throne) may still have some hold over him after his brief reign. He's probably beyond Their reach on the ship, but he doesn't know that, at least not yet.
  • Despite this he also kind of wishes he'd experimented more with it when he did temporarily have eldritch powers.
  • After getting chased, bitten, and occasionally mauled and/or killed by vicious bloodthirsty Hounds every week, he has developed a fear of dogs larger than approximately terrier size - not that he was much of a dog person in the first place - and by association wolves, coyotes, and any other large canids.
  • Also pretty freaked out by being picked up, grabbed, or forcibly held still, from all the times he's been grabbed by a giant shadow hand, glued to the ground and kicked to a pulp by an Ewecus, pounced on and torn apart by some huge bestial monster, etcetera. The bonds holding him to the Nightmare Throne didn't help with this either.

Greatest Fear: Having his brain turn permanently to mush, whether from magical interference, physical head trauma or anything in between

Greatest Desire: Knowledge. As much of it as possible. Preferably without driving himself insane?

Greatest Regret: Letting Maxwell browbeat him into pulling the lever on the portal that sucked him into the Constant. (He has not thought about how getting sucked into another dimension was a prerequisite for making friends and growing as a person for the first time since undergrad; he doesn't regret meeting the other survivors, but he hasn't connected those dots.)
